Type:

The Module is organised as five in-class, full-day Workshops (9-17 hrs) with 35 contact hours (lectures, in-class activities, graded oral presentation). The five Workshops are separated by four independent self-study periods (55 hours), resulting in a total workload of 90 hours (3 ECTS). 

All five Workshops are conducted at the Tiergarten building of Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH in Burgdorf, Switzerland (see “Organizer Details”).

Instruction is generally in English (student presentations and project proposals may be given/written in German, French or English).

Description (max. 300 characters):

Ensuring third-party funding for applied research / service contracts is daily business in the professional life of an engineer. This Module offers a systematic real-life approach to compiling an idea into a convincing project proposal in view of getting a research project or service contract funded.

Contents and Learning Objectives:

Prior to the Module, the students will develop their own idea or develop an idea together with their advisor. They will also sign a “non-disclosure agreement” to fully protect the intellectual property rights of all Module participants. 

During the Module, the students will gain competences in project acquisition ranging from the development and examining of an idea to the stepwise compilation of the idea into a written project proposal for submission to a funding agency. They will acquire successful strategies necessary to protect the intellectual property rights of an idea and become familiar with agencies suitable for funding engineering research work. Specific learning goals include a simulated review for the students to receive critical feed-back from (external) experts focusing on the collaboration with industry. 

Admission: Bachelor of Science (or equivalent), English language skills.

Conditions:

80% in-class attendance is required; attendance on Workshop 4 (graded oral assignment) is compulsory.
